Most AI tools wait for you. You open a chat, type a question, read the answer, and the work stops the moment you close the window. Claude Duet does not wait. Anthropic launched it on 21 October 2026 as an always-on agent: it keeps working in the background and comes back to you only when it needs a decision.
That is the reason for the headline. 20X is not a number we measured with a stopwatch. It is what it feels like when the work no longer stops every time you look away. You and the agent play the same piece at the same time, a duet, instead of taking turns.
What Claude Duet is
Duet is a separate app from the normal Claude app, on iOS, Android and the web. Anthropic pitches it as a chief of staff for professionals and small business owners. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5.

How it works
- A daily briefing: Duet builds a briefing and dashboards from your own data and suggests what to do next.
- Channels per topic: recurring subjects get their own channel, with a running list of what Duet is working on and what it needs from you.
- Work in the background: tasks run on Duet's own virtual machine, so they continue while you do something else.
- Documents that stay current: it can edit docs, slides, designs and dashboards and keep them up to date.
- You stay in charge: payments and other sensitive steps wait for your approval. A classifier checks messages so sensitive details such as card numbers and ID numbers are not handed out.
Why it feels like 20X
The time an AI saves inside one answer is small. The big gain is in the time between answers. A normal assistant stops when you stop. An agent that keeps going, follows up on its own and only interrupts you for decisions changes the shape of the day: you spend your time choosing, not chasing.
For a small company this matters even more. There is no assistant, no operations team and no one to keep the dashboards current. An always-on agent can take a share of that work, and the owner gets a briefing instead of a backlog.
What it does not do yet
It is a research preview, and early reviews point out rough edges. Anthropic says personal errands such as trip planning or booking a haircut are not polished yet. Reviewers note that it has no real voice mode yet, and that scheduled runs cannot reach custom connectors. Expect it to change quickly.
